Phillips was born in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom in 1986. Phillips’s work is a personal reaction to life and modern society. He represents the human condition in a notion that is easily manipulated and fragile. His field of interest has always been focused on the alternative and the exotic. Phillips has been making images since the late 90’s, as a child it was an honest and his preferred form of communication because of his Dyslexia.
The tortured style of his work is fueled by the acute anxiety Phillips has suffered from since early adolescence. His studies engage with imagery of the macarb and are strongly influenced by eastern popular culture, Japanese consumer culture, and tradition. This is a fascination that has been with him since infancy and continues to influence his art practice.
The often obsessive work of Charlie Phillips appears in the forms of mixed media paintings combining oil paint, pen, ink, collage and charcoal and in the past has been known to set the surface of his work on fire. He also works in other forms of media including literature and film, which caused a stir when screened at his university in 2007.
His work is considered both beautiful and controversial as selected works were “Banned” from his debut exhibition in Wales in 2008.
